Match Report – 27th Aug

Dinton played host to ten men Hobo’s on Saturday and given the damp weather off recent days it was no surprise that the Home skipper Simon Rawlins asked his opposite number to bat first.

Run scoring opportunity were few and far between in the opening over which the 1st 15 overs only yielding 18 runs including 6 successive maidens, Rich Cridge delivery a particularly miserly spell of 5 over of 1-21incluing 4 maidens.

The introduction of Martin Stennings (3-39) saw three quick wickets fall as the visitors fund themselves 80-7 with 11 overs to go. It was at this point Watta started to up the run he had already past 50 by this stage and with one ball off the innings to he brought up is 100. 92 runs were added in the final 10 overs the last wicket partnership adding 66 runs as Hobo’s went into tea on 172-8.

Dinton’s innings got of to a good start and kept up with the run rate and at 119-3 the game was in the balance but a 4 wicket for just 26 runs took the game away from the host these wickets including opener Angle Zissis for 58 and with his departure the game was effectively over as a contest, and in the 40th over it was with Dinton being bowled out for 152 21 runs short of their target. For the visitors Watta who had a great all round game finished with 4-28 and was well supported by Sham who took 3-22 from his 5 overs.

Dinton 2ns XI made the short trip to already promoted South Wilts 4th The home bowlers proved too strong for their batting line up, Charlie Gent  Gent did most of the damage for his side taking 5-31. Skipper Kingley batted well for 25 until he became one of Gents victims. Nick Gale who has been so consistent all season also batted well for 20 as wickets fell around him. Dinton finally fell for 82. In reply a 41 run opening partner ship between Trevor Pittman (35 not out) and Dan Holewell account for half the required runs until Rich Peace (1-13) separated them. 1 more wicket fell to Read (1-12) which brought Matt Shellum (24) to join Pittman and 10 overs later it was all over as South Wilts 4th sealed their win and with it promotion.

Reviewing the league season Dinton Club Captain Rich Cridge said “It’s not been a bad season for us, we’ve had some huge availably issue this summer and a long injury list so a mid table finish for our 1st and lower half finished for the 2nd’s is a fair return. At different times both sides have pull off results against the odds so we can be proud off what we have achieved and the way we have conducted ourselves. This was also the first year we had 2 league sides so it’s been a steep leaning curve for all off us. I think this leaves us in a strong position for next year.”

Match Report – 20th Aug

Rich Cridge:

An under strengthen Dinton 1st XI ravished by injury and unavailability travailed to St Cross on Saturday. The game started late due to heavy rain but by 1440hrs the ground  was ready to play the match being reduced to 36 overs a side. Dinton soon found themselves in trouble at 19-3 in the 8th over. It was at this point that Damith Gunawardana joined Larne Harwood and the rebuild commenced;

Gunawardana in his normal hard hitting way smashing anything loose to the boundary. Harwood was happy to play a more supportive role while still being positive. Gunawardana past his 50 from just 44 balls it then only took him 28 ball to convert it into the first century of his Dinton career. The partnership had yielded 142 runs when Harwood was dismissed for 35 as Smith had him caught in the covers.

Wickets then started to fall regularly as Dinton pushed towards the 200 mark including Gunawardana who was unluckily run out for a fine 116 including 18 boundaries.

Dinton closed their inning on 214 the first time they have managed to pass the 200 mark this season. Smith was the pick of the home side bowling taking 3-58 from his 9 overs.

The hosts innings got of to the worst possible start with a run out in the 3rd over. Fidge and Steele (20) took the score past 50 and were looking to build a good platform until the introduction of Arran Musselwhite broke the partnership with his 4th ball. Fidge was then joined by Wertherly and the pair kept their team in the hut taking the score to the brink off 100 until Fidge was caught and bowled by Musselwhite. Following his dismissal the run rate started to grow and boundaries dried up. Kingley Read delivered a miserly spell of 0-28 but Wertherly grew in confidence and with Cranley (30) the pair started to claw their way back into the game. Gunawardana (3-49) who was wicketless in his first spell returned and had an immediate effect taking two wickets in his 1st over back. The game was in the balance and with 16 needed off the final over 9 were hit from it as Dinton won a hard fault game by 7 runs. Wertherly remained undefeated on a valiant 69, Musselwhite finishing with 3-48.

Dinton’s 2nd XI also had a rain reduced affair in their match at home against Redlynch and Hale 2nd XI. Redlynch batted first and they made a confident start with 42 being added for the first wicket by Tom Bayfield (21) and Lawrance Hardley (34) until Steve Middlecote (2-37) made a double brake though in the 14th over. The visitors kept up a good run rate as a succession off batsman made it to double figures but was unable to carry on to made a bigger score as the host kept chipping away.

Redlynch finished their 32 overs on 174, Nick Gale taking 2-37 but it was the skipper Rob Middlecote who took the most wickets with 4-69.

The visitors made a great start as the first Dinton wicket fell in the 2nd over Ben Coombes (34) and John Pearce (26) took the score into the 60’s before John Church had Pearce caught and bowled. This brought Nick Gale to join Coombes and another 59 runs before Coombes was dismissed. This would be Redlynch’s final wickets as the ever consistent Gale took his team to victory finishing on 71 not out and was well supported by Sean Howell (23 not out). Although just about save this victory means Dinton’s 2nd XI have cemented their Div 2 status next year.

Rich Cridge:

Dinton 1st XI played host to Chawton on Saturday and with the rain that had preceded the match the home team was not surprised to be batting first after losing the toss. The ball was in the ascendancy thought out the innings as a succession of Dinton batsmen made starts but we unable to carry on to make a telling contribution. Lance Hardwood top scored with 31 and along with Damith Gunawardana (22) produced the most productive partnership of the inning adding 37 for the 6th wicket. Richard Pearce 29 again made a solid contribution in the lower order but he was unable to prevent his team being dismissed for 143 in only the 35 over. All of the 5 bowlers the visitors used took wicket but it was J Channon and M Skilton who did most of the damage taking 3 wickets each for the 32 and 45 runs respectfully.

Gunawardana (2-21) gave his side the perfect start taking the first wicket from the 3rd ball off the innings. Although two more wickets fell as Chawton found them self 42-3 it became an up hill battle for the home side as catches went to ground. Channon (43 not out) who had a fine all-round game in partnership with his skipper Guy Charlton (45 not  out) adding 102 for the 4th wicket to take their team to their victory total commending their host to a 7 wicket defeat.

Meanwhile Dinton 2nd XI had a hard fault game at Longparish against their 2nd XI. On a damp pitch Dinton had no hesitation n blowing first on winning the toss. Dinton held the upper hand to start with as 2 wicket had fallen by the 11th over. But a captain innings of 90 from Justin Jackman put his team back into the game he added 49 with Martin Savage (30) for the 3rd wicket before Savage was bowled by the luckless Steve Middlecote who finished with 1-14 from his 10 over. With 5 overs to go Dinton were happy with Parish’s total of 133 but a late surge from Jackman adding 54 before he became Rich Cridge’s (3-61) third wicket, as the home side finished on 187-6.

In reply opener John Pearce got his team off to a great start and while he was at the crease Dinton kept up with the run rate. But following his dismal for a fine 38 the run rate slowed, as the ball took the upper hand. 5 further Dinton batsman got to double figures and just like their 1st XI colleagues none were able to go onto make a match winning contribution. In the end they finished 35 short of their target skipper Rob Middlecote finishing on 20 not out. For Longparish it was economic 10 over spells in the middle off the innings from James Young 3-26 and Matt Paice 1-20  that help their team to victory.

Next week Dinton 1st travel to St Cross Symondians IV’s while the 2nd XI are at home to Redlynch 2nds who are one place towards the bottom of table

Match Report – 30July

Rich Cridge:

Dinton 1st XI travelled to Tichborne Park to take on their 2nd string. Dinton won the toss and were thankful for the opportunity to bat first on a hot afternoon.

It was the home team that took the first blow as Luff took the first wicket as early as the 3rd over. Richard Randall (36) joined Ben Coombes (21) and the pair started to rebuild the innings with a partnership of 68 they worked the singles well playing the ball into gaps. With the score on 68 Tichborne struck back with a wicket either side of drinks. This again meant the Dinton batsman had to rebuild at a time when they should have been kicking on.

A solid 48 run partnership between Matt Coombes (29) and Sam Randall put Dinton back on track and past the 100 mark. It was the return of Luff that delivered the vital blow for Park as he took three wickets in an over. This stopped Dinton getting a big total as they had to settle for 155-8 from their 42 overs 15 year old Sam Randall finished undefeated on 25 with Luff completing 9 overs with figures of 5-36.

Dinton took the field knowing that they would have to work hard with their bowling recourses being thin on the ground due player unavailability. Dinton took three quick wickets as the Richard’s Cridge (1-38) and Randall (2-37) reducing their opponents to 29-3. But Barnett (31) was joined by Booker and the pair set about taking their team to victory they rode their luck as Dinton we unable to take a number of chances that were offered. It wasn’t until the 36th over when skipper Simon Rawlins (2-11) brought himself into the attack that the pair was parted by which time 109 runs had been added and 15 were required from the last 6 overs. However there was mini twist as Dinton took two more quick wickets to set nerve jangling but it was too little to late as the home side sealed their victory with 10 balls to spare Booker finishing on 77 not out.

Dinton 2nd XI played host to Shrewton II and on winning the toss Dinton skipper Rob Middlecote asked his opposite number to bat first. Their total off 224 was built mainly on the batting exploits of Mark Gurd and Darren Bentley who struck 60 and 65 respectfully. Dinton’s 7 wickets were spread about with 2 a peace going to Martin Stennings, Lance Harwood and Rob Middlecote. Shrewton struck early but Lawrance Hannahford (70) and Nick Gale (30) added 74 for the 2nd wicket with the score on 90 but following their dismissal none of the home batting was able to pick up the baton as the last 8 wickets fell for 60 runs as Shrewton completed 74 run victory. Pownall doing the most damage taking 4-31.

Dinton held their 2nd annual Summer School last week which was again a huge success 41 youngsters attended across the four days. Ranging in age from 6-14 learned all the skills of cricket. Money raided from the vent has will be used to purchase more equipment for the colts section.

Match Report – 23July

Rich Cridge

Following last weeks rain all cricketers were glad to be back in action on Saturday. Dinton 1st XI were at home to Old Alresford the start was delayed by 15 minutes due to some vandalism of the wicket. Dinton players arrived at the ground to find that somebody had very ‘kindly’ dug a hole on the middle of the pitch that was due to be used for the game, luckily Dinton’s groundsman had half started another pitch for next weeks game so it was all hands to the pump to get it ready cut rolled and marked ready for play.

Dinton soon found themselves 27-3 once the game got under way as the visitors bowlers found the under prepared pitch helpful for bowling. The impressive Connell finding himself on a hat trick that he was unable to complete. Ben Coombes stood firm and found brief support from the middle order Damith Gunawardana (24) and Neil Stevens (19) helping to take the score to the brink off the 100 mark. Coombes who has been struggling for runs all season found his form just when his team really needed it. He past his 50 while in partnership with Rich Cridge (12) who was the only other batsman to make a double figure contribution. Coombes was finally out in the 40th over for a valiant 59 shortly before the inning closed in the next over for 157, for the visitors M Armittage 2-17 and N Connell 3-34 from their 10 overs were this best of the bowlers.

With a small total to defend quick wickets were a must and with a very depleted bowling attack this was not going to be easy, but Gunawardana (3-33) took the responsibility superbly and quickly dismissed the first 3 batsman. With Lance Harwood (2-25) taking a wicket in his first over Old Alresford found themselves in trouble at 24-4, this brought skipper David Stanbrook to the crease and he started what would be a captain’s innings as he struggled to find much support from his team mates. Arran Musselwhite (4-29) started to take regular wickets. But Stanbrook single handily kept his team in the hunt until he fell just short being the last wicket to fall for 62 with his team on 138 19 shirt off their target.

Dinton’s 2nd XI was away atUpper Clatford in an even tigher match. Dinton batted first and on a slow pitch found run scoring difficult Nick Gale (49) and Malcolm Hannaford (35) were the main stay of the Dinton innings both finding got support from skipper Kingsley Read who hit 29. Dinton innings closed on 148-7 M. Glen leading the way for the hosts with the ball conceding just 13 runs from his 10 overs taking 2 wickets.

Dinton took wickets regularly asUpper Clatfordmade steady progress towards their target. R Southwood hitting 36 did the most to help his team towards their target the visitors took wicket regularly S Nokes (2-23) ad Gale (4-31) doing most off the damage the game was in the balance throughout and game down the finally over with 5 needed. 4 were scored from the first 5 balls meaning the game was tied with one ball to bowled with all result possible it wasUpper Clatfordwho game out winner as a scrambled run was completed to give the host victory by the narrowest off margins of 1 wicket. Glen finishing 32 not out to finish a fine all round match.
